Health Information

For the most part they are considered to be overall a pretty healthy breed of dogs, however, just as with any other breed there are some things that may be more likely to occur with the breed than others. Some that are known of are - stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, intervertebral disc degeneration, hemi vertebrae, CHD, patellar luxation and entropion.

Occasionally distichiasis, cataract, cherry eye and deafness may also be seen as well.

* Umbilical hernias are a fairly common occurrence during whelping, just as it is with many other snub nose breeds.

The average life span of an American Bullnese is noted to be somewhere between 9 and 11 years, and some may even live longer healthier lives.

As with any breed or pet of course other health issues can arise and there can always be exceptions. If there's ever any question as to ones pet's health it is always best to see a veterinarian.

     * For many years our dogs have been cared for by the veterinarians and staff of the
Nash County Animal Hospital
